ErrNET Overview ErrNET was developed in collaboration with professional editors and publishers, and checks grammar, punctuation, style, and spelling. A large portion of the ErrNET database includes errors, identified by editors, from papers submitted to professional journals. Using ErrNET is like having a professional editor proofread your work. Use ErrNET to proofread your letters, presentations, theses, research reports, white papers, grant proposals, review articles, dissertations, brochures, and books. “ErrNET is the first step we take in the initial proofreading stages of selected manuscripts.”
“ErrNET reduces the time I spend doing scientific english proofreading of biomedical manuscripts and grant research plans by at least 30%. In addition, I find that ErrNET picks up errors that 'wow' those who use my services -- I send the ErrNET reports directly to the authors.”
ErrNET Features Grammar Checking ErrNET checks for grammatical errors such as incomplete sentences, subject/verb agreement, use of coordinating conjunctions, preposition use, and missing articles and words. Spell Checking The ErrNET spell-check database contains over two million terms and includes both a standard dictionary and a scientific/technical dictionary that includes life, physical, and applied science (engineering, computer science, architecture, etc.) terms. Any word not recognized by the spellchecker is marked one time in the manuscript to alert the author to double-check the spelling. Unrecognized terms are automatically forwarded to our engineers and are added to the ErrNET spell-check database once the correct spellings of the terms are verified. The ErrNET spellchecker also verifies website addresses (URLs). It “activates” URLs in the documents and confirms that they link to websites that are live and have not re-located. Style Checking ErrNET marks only objective writing style errors. These errors include awkward writing, verbose phrases, redundant phrases, word choice, and word order. ErrNET style suggestions help to improve writing clarity, conciseness, and fluency. ErrNET also flags colloquial words and phrases, and abbreviations and contractions that are not suitable for formal writing. Punctuation Checking ErrNET marks punctuation errors, and suggests punctuation changes to improve writing clarity and fluency. The types of punctuation errors detected by ErrNET include use of commas, capitalizations, hyphens, parenthesis, and apostrophes. How it Works The process is simple and takes only minutes. ErrNET runs on our servers so there is no need to install software or updates. The program uploads documents (PDF format) through your web browser. It then calculates price, based on the total number of pages, and requests payment. Once payment is received, ErrNET checks for errors, marks them in your document, and generates an error report showing the total number and types of errors. The error report and annotated document are then downloaded by the user. Explanations and suggestions for each error are listed in the detailed report and are displayed in pop-up windows in the annotated document. ErrNET Sample Reports ErrNET does not make corrections in the document but generates two reports, an annotated document and an error report. Each type of error is indicated with a particular color: grammar-red, style-yellow, spelling-blue, and punctuation-green. In the annotated document, the errors are underlined throughout the text and the explanations and suggestions for each error are displayed in the right margin. The error report summarizes the total number and types of each error in a bar graph and lists each error, its location, and the ErrNET suggestions. The error report is particularly useful when the reports are printed because the ErrNET suggestions in the annotated document do not print (only the lines underneath each error in the annotated document print). The following screenshots are samples of both an annotated document and error report that are generated after checking a paper with ErrNET:
